Abstract

The problem of national identity formation in the context of
modern globalization and post-Soviet transformation is becoming particularly relevant for the countries of Central Asia. In this process, historical memory
and the institutional mechanisms of its management, that is, memory policy,
become an important tool for strengthening statehood and social integrity.
This article is aimed at a scientific understanding of the role of memory
politics and historical narratives in the formation of national identity based
on the experience of Central Asian countries.
The purpose of the study is to identify the mechanisms of influence of
historical memory and historical narratives on national identity and to reveal
their integrative and conflict-causing aspects. In the course of the research, the
policy of memory is considered as a symbolic, ideological and institutional
means of forming national identity. The main idea is based on the proof that
historical memory is not a reflection of a neutral past, but a dynamic and
multilevel structure closely related to current political and s ocial processes.
Methodologically, the research was conducted based on qualitative
approaches. The main methods used were discursive analysis, narrative
analysis and the comparative historical method. The source base of the
research was made up of state-level historical policy documents, official
materials in the field of education, as well as domestic and foreign academic
research.
The results of the study showed that the policy of memory has a
multifaceted impact on the formation of national identity. It has been found that
historical narratives can increase the risk of social classification by creating a
common historical space and strengthening social cohesion, on the one hand,
and eliminating alternative memories, on the other. The scientific value of
the research is determined by a comprehensive analysis of the features of
memory policy in Central Asia and the theoretical deepening of the process of
national identity formation. The conclusions obtained from a practical point
of view can be used in improving historical policy, updating the content of
education and developing cultural strategies aimed at strengthening social
harmony.
